The port of Moji (known as “Mojiko”) opened in 1889 and flourished as an international trading port. The surrounding area, the“Retro District, is now known as a popular tourist destination.
The Retro District has artfully blended its new functionality as a city with its old city streets and historical “exotic” Western-style buildings that retain the atmosphere of the era in which they were built. The year-round “Night Fantasy” light show runs every evening from between 5pm and 7pm (depending on the season) until 9:15pm Mondays through Thursdays, 10pm Fridays through Sundays and holidays. The area is also illuminated from December to the fourth Sunday in March every year.
